I’ve been a professional cleaner/business owner for many years and it still amazes me how quickly people look down on the role the moment they hear the word cleaner. I’ve heard it all - comments that we’re “paid too much,” that because we don’t have a degree we “deserve” only minimum wage, or that the job is “not hard.” These opinions completely miss the skill, knowledge, and responsibility this work actually requires.

Cleaning is so much more than wiping a surface. I’ve completed courses to learn exactly which products and techniques are safe for different materials and environments. It takes expertise in hygiene, health and safety and a sharp eye for detail, skills that protect people, property and public health every single day.

Yet society often respects some jobs while dismissing others, as if a title alone determines value. The truth is, cleaners perform essential work that keeps workplaces, homes and communities safe and functional. There is no shame in an honest profession that demands both skill and dedication.

What most people never see is the pride and care behind this work. Cleaners work long or irregular hours, adapt to different spaces and carry the quiet responsibility of creating environments others can feel safe and comfortable in. We might not wear suits or sit in offices, but our efforts are the foundation that allows everyone else to do their jobs and live their lives. Respect for that effort should be the standard, not the exception.

So next time you walk into a clean room, remember, it didn’t happen by accident. Someone’s hard work made that space possible and that work deserves respect.
